The Eschmann Guide to Laundry Solutions
Did you know that using professional laundry solutions could help to save your practice money
and help reduce your impact on the environment?
Below is our guide to laundry in healthcare settings, including dental practices and veterinary surgeries. This includes a comparison of
professional vs domestic laundry solutions in healthcare settings and information to you to make a decision on which is best for your practice.
To ensure high-quality laundry workflows, it’s important that all textiles are exposed to the right temperatures, for the right amount of time. This means that the relevent pathogens are destroyed. Bacteria are eliminated by washing laundry for at least 10 minutes at 65ºC or 3 minutes at 71ºC. Many domestic washing machines will struggle to consistently achieve this, reducing the efficiency of a business’ laundry solutions.
This is one reason why it’s important for businesses to implement commercial laundry equipment. Another reason is for improved cost-efficiency. Leading commercially available washing machines have been found to outperform domestic units by a long way. For example, the Miele Professional Little Giant washer has been tested to last 30,000 wash cycles with a lifetime of up to 10 years – a domestic unit would need replacing on average six times in the same period! Using professional machines can also help reduce your carbon footprint as fewer domestic machines will end up in landfill.
Professional washing machines will also usually be WRAS approved, whereas generally domestic machines are simply not designed to comply with these standards.

The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) is an independent certification body in the UK that accredits products designed to keep water safe. Most businesses will need equipment certified for category 5 – which is fluid that “represents a serious public health hazard because of the concentration of pathogenic organisms, radioactive or very toxic substances”.
For many healthcare, veterinary and other businesses, the use of WRAS-approved equipment is vital to ensure that water quality on the premises remains safe for patients, staff and visitors.
When you are looking to buy products for your workplace, you can check whether they have WRAS approval by looking at the manufacturer’s website or product literature.
